The Table as Programmatic Architecture

Appologies in advance for a rather long and possibly a boring posting.

This is a good idea (table), although when I walked away from the meeting yesterday I thought that we had agreed on something else, nonetheless it could be an interesting approach to the semester.
I do have a couple of concerns with this approach however that I would like to share with everyone; mainly that this concept can be interpreted as lacking Architectural merit, this, in my opinion is encroaching too much on the industrial design discipline and having the table (an object) as the central focus could erode our credibility as Architects even when taking into consideration that Architecture overlaps and coexists with all other professions and things in this universe. There is also the technical challenges of building these things in the short time which we have. It would be embarrasing if at the end of the semester if all that we showcase is a series of tables which can be folded and brought together to accomodate more people, I mean we shuffle tables around everyday in the studio, everyone does in their daily lives. My brother has in his possession at his home a table which does the following; fold out to seat 6 people to dine, a chess board, becomes a table tennis and small pool table can become a computer work station, all of this and it folds neatly, it is easily transportable as it has wheels to move around and weighs less than 10kg...so what.

Adding to that the fact that we are predominantly looking to sourse unused or vacant buildings which we probably will not be able to influence the surounds of or alter many, if any components of as well as meet the legal demands of their owners things like insurances, public liability, bonds and so forth that is if they do agree to allow us to use their premises are challenges which we need to have ironed out prior to commencing this project. These negotiations with these property owners could take Months and we may not be able to view the spaces which we are setting up our program in until much much later. In a way it probably is easier and more fruitfull if we negotiate with government bodies as they could be more sympathetic to our cause and are more accessible to say a property owner who is interstate or oversees. Somewhere on UTS campus would be better and have more exposure than say level 2 in a building on Harris St.

Now that I got this of my chest, I am excited and ready to tackle this assignment with unprecedented zeal.
