Tasks for Assessment 2 Submission


Below are the assigned tasks for submission on the 12th of October. The submission items are in the first row of bullet points. The secondary bullet points include examples, criteria or suggestions. Each group is to interpret and modify their approach in relation to the overall hypothesis to test the role of social architecture in activating the city.

Please Note: The submission items need to be of a very high quality. However, the aim of this submission is to create a body of creative work that we can use to determine an overarching aesthetic representation approach for the rest of semester. All items will need to be open to re-editing according to the team’s feedback and the selected approach. Keep all files and original images for future refinement.



Conceptual Filmic Representation
[ Matt S, Linette, Mike ]
·       Effectively communicate the concept and motivations of Patchworks in a 30 second intro
·       Filmic representation of the TravelDator Event emphasising:
o   Social Architecture
o   Space-time-program-architecture relationship
o   Activating the city
o   Aesthetic representation of:
§  How space is transformed through programmatic activity
§  Taking a professional, intellectual approach.


Photographic Representation
[ Tristan, Jason, Matt M ]
·       A series of research images that:
o   Capture the narrative of the hypothesis in the context of the City, showing the motivation for Patchworks.
o   E.g. laneway spaces, dead spaces, empty shopfronts.
o   Rigour of aesthetic approach in line with whole project.
·       A series of images capturing stages of the TravelDator project (before and during):
o   Rigour of approach to capturing both social and architectural elements.
o   Rigour of aesthetic approach in line with whole project.
o   Capacity to capture important elements of the event.
o   Capacity to capture and communicate:
§  How space is transformed through programmatic activity
§  Atmosphere, emotion.
§  Architectural context, specificity of site.
·       Conceptually organised photo-diagram that:
o    Classifies/arranges the images according to critical analysis of social architecture evidenced/demonstrated in the Event in line with the hypothesis.
o   Rigour of aesthetic approach in line with whole project.


Animated Programmatic Diagrams

·       A diagrammatic precedents study:
o   Finding examples of drawing styles, animation styles, graphic styles from which to draw influence. E.g. Graphic Anatomy by Atelier Bow Wow; Pet Architecture by Atelier Bow Wow; Naked City by Situationists.
o   An analysis and extraction of the successful components that will be used.
·       Thorough programmatic representation of the TravelDator event through:
o   Simple black and white line drawings following one style based on the research.
o   Rigour and thoroughness in presenting program through diagram.
o   Rigour of aesthetic approach in line with whole project.


Behind the Scenes Video

·       3-minute film of the behind the scenes sequence of the project to date.
o   Tying in the development of the ideas, coordinating with Natasha and Maria.
o   Capacity to represent the atmosphere of learning and collaborating on a real project for the semester.

o   Evidence of design and workshopping process.
o   Mixed to music rather than voice-overs; using interview style; fun and energetic rather than too heavy.
o   Combining other documentation from Joanne, Jason, and others.


Hypothesis

·       2000-3000 word essay with pictures that have captions.
·       Background research on Social Architecture and Program in Architecture, E.g. information architecture applications, The Situationists, Bernard Tschumi, Henri Lefebvre, Rem Koolhaas, Toyo Ito, Atelier Bow Wow.
o   Include quotes
o   Include images of other’s projects with figure captions.
·       Critical analysis of Social Architecture:
o   Capacity for program to revitalise places in the city.
o   How new value is created in the city.
o   How social patterns can be constructed through architecture.
·       Verbal presentation / summary.
·       Layout into book format:
o   Rigour of aesthetic approach in line with whole project.


Design Thinking

·       Background research on:
o   Visualisation methods for showing collaboration and sequence in design projects. E.g. EPFL Lab, Mind maps, information architecture maps, OMA.
o   Design thinking in groups. Social architecture of designing in groups.
·       Design thinking critical reflection – 1000 words:
o   Looks at how different approaches to collaboration and management affected our movement through ideas etc.
o   Design learning perspectives.
o   Looks at how the Patchworks project was created. How Patchworks works as an experimental enterprise.
o   Tie in with images and diagrams from other students’ components.
·       Diagram(s) showing the process of the studio to date:
o   Massive mind map, possibly comprising of sub-maps.
§  Show the way 17 people work together.
§  Temporal dimension.
§  Thumbnail images referencing the content.
o   Rigour of aesthetic approach in line with whole project.
